The new curator of the Royal Mausoleum at Mauna Ala has been selected, becoming the 15th person to hold the position.

William “Kai” Bishop Kaiheekai Maioho will assume the job on Wednesday. He succeeds his father, William “Bill” Maioho, who died earlier this year.

The mausoleum was established in 1865 as the final resting place of the Kamehameha and Kalakua dynasties, their families and retainers. Internments include Kamehameha II, who ended the kapu system, and Queen Liliuokalani, the last ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

The state monument is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tours are available with advance notice.
